Oh deer, oh deer, oh deer, oh deer.....
Roe Fawns are regularly cared for at Secret World but this year’s intake of 11 has made it a very busy feeding regime. They are incredibly shy and nervous and it is often difficult to get them to feed. We are always concerned that people will pick them up when finding them lying quietly on their own in the long grass on their own which is perfectly natural. It is always important to give the mother chance to come back for it. However only one of the fawns brought to our centre could possibly have been left; the others were all true orphans.
Cindy was our first fawn on the year, quickly followed by Sugar and Spice. Lizzie found by her dead sibling and Shadow who had severe head trauma did not survive but Sammy, Bambi, Misty, Crystal, Miney and Mo are all doing well.
Seven of the fawns are now together in our fawn unit with a shed to go into at night and a grassed paddock where they spend their days. When they are all out in the long grass, it is almost impossible to see them unless you manage to glimpse their ears. These seven are now being feed twice a day with only 4 still on the bottle as the others are now lapping. They are all tucking into goat coarse mixture and grated carrot with chopped apple.
Miney and Mo have only just recently arrived. Miney is about 6 weeks old. His mother was shot and it was only the intervention of a brave person passing by that the fawn was not shot as well. Mo is yet another fawn attacked by dogs, the fifth one to come into our centre for this reason.
It is so important for people to be aware that young fawns are about and they should have control of their dogs in the countryside. We hope they will all survive but we have a long way to go before they will be ready for release.
Stop Press… Watch out for our new web cameras that we will soon have up and running. You will then be able to see how they are all doing for yourselves
It costs over £1000 a day for our centre to run – can you help raise funds by holding an event for us – see our fundraising page.
