Secret World – the official voice for wildlife in Somerset
With 72,000 deer and other threatened species such as hedgehogs and birds of prey injured or killed through road traffic accidents every year, Secret World welcomes the Somerset Tourist Association’s initiative Somerset Explorer. It encourages tourism with minimum impact upon the environment by promoting the use of public transport packages.

It’s alarming to see just how rapidly the decline of wildlife in the South West is taking hold. 200 of the species that live here are officially endangered and the area is developing more rapidly than any other UK area in the past 20 years. Garden bird numbers have dropped and hedgehog numbers have plummeted so rapidly that some experts predict they could be extinct within the next 20 years. |
To experience the magic of seeing Britain’s native wildlife close up and to find out more about why wildlife needs you, visit Secret World on one of our Open Weekends. Click here for more informaton.
As the region’s busiest wildlife rescue service rescuing over 4,000 wild animals and birds a year, always with the aim of returning them to the wild, Secret World provides a practical and immediate response to the threats facing wildlife. But as a leading voice for wildlife, regularly called upon to provide national commentary on Britain’s native wildlife, Secret World believes we have a duty to do more to help reverse its decline.
Already we have a nationally revered wildlife rehabilitation programme taking over two thirds of certain species from across the UK, exceptional wildlife behaviour and habitat knowledge which we share with companies nationwide and the ability to deliver an inspirational wildlife education programme unique in the South West. We also created and lead a coalition of wildlife hospitals ‘Voices 4 Wildlife’ to raise wildlife care standards nationally. |

Over the next 5 years we plan to develop this work to:
- inspire the next generation to conserve wildlife;
- to raise standards of wildlife care in the veterinary profession and
- encourage more companies to play a role in wildlife conservation.
Somerset Companies Helping Wildlife.
If your company is based in Somerset and you have land then you too can play your part in this drive to protect the region's wildlife heritage and be officially recognised for your efforts.
